The Holidays are upon us! As you are holiday shopping and out and about you will probably notice poinsettias are popping up everywhere. There is a certain Christmas charm about these flowers that you just can’t get with any other variety of plant. They are popular decorations and gifts, and come in a variety of colors- red, white, pink, lemon, peach, and red/white or pink/white splashed leaves.
Whether you order one from Evergreen or pick up one from your local florist, caring for them correctly is an important part of keeping them beautiful throughout the season. Keeping a stable temperature (never below 50 or above 70) will be an important part of making your poinsettia last as long as possible. Keep your poinsettia near a sunny window, but make sure none of it touches the cold glass of the window. Don’t let the soil dry out, keep it regularly watered so the soil is always moist.
December 12th is National Poinsettia Day!
– Poinsettias were named after the former US ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel R. Poinsett who introduced the Poinsettia to the United States.
– Some Poinsettias at time can reach heights up to 16 FEET!
– Poinsettias are considered tropical plants and are native to Central America and Mexico.
– Other names for a Poinsettia are “Christmas Flower”, “Lobster Flower” or “Mexican Flame Leaf”.
